Katarina Leyman (1963), originally from the Island Orust at the Swedish West Coast, now lives and works in Stockholm.
Color and texture, shape and movement are often starting points and form-building elements in her music. Ideas for compositions often come from natural phenomena such as fish moving in shoals, DNA chains, water molecules and clouds. For some years she studied painting and sculpture at various preparatory art schools in Stockholm. An early inspiration and a way in to the modern and abstract art expression was her father’s, the sculptor Fred Leyman, airy and rhythmic often monumental compositions of stainless steel, iron and wood.
Katarina often works in close collaboration with various musicians and ensembles and composes predominantly orchestral and chamber music. Her music has been performed in Europe, the Americas and Russia, including various music festivals such as the Baltic Sea Festival 2010, ISCM World New Music days Zagreb 2011, Nordic Music Days Reykjavik 2011, the Brass festival Signal i Gävle 2014, Saxå Chamber Music Festival 2015, Sound of Stockholm 2016.
The solo piece for viola ”Tales of Lost Times” was commissioned by Stockholm Concert Hall and ECHO, European Concert Hall Organisation for Ellen Nisbeth, ECHO Rising Star 2017/18.
2012 - 2015 Katarina was the Composer in Residence for Norrlandsoperan Symphony Orchestra.
A portrait CD, Vattenklanger, with chamber music was released 2019.
